Gray, John

Nascut a South Shields, County Durham, el 1948. Filòsof i politòleg britànic. Format a Oxford, entre el 1976 i el 1996 va ser professor al Jesus College d’Oxford i de la Universitat d’Essex, i professor visitant a les universitats de Harvard i de Yale.

L’any 1996 va esdevenir professor de polítiques a la Universitat d’Oxford. Entre el 1998 i el 2007 va ser catedràtic de Pensament Europeu  a la London School of Economics, institució de la qual, des del 2008, n’és professor emèrit.

La idea de progrés i de modernitat són a la base de molts dels seus estudis i assaigs, alguns dels quals recollits en llibres com ara, entre els més recents, Enlightenment’s Wake: Politics and Culture at the Close of the Modern Age (2007); False Dawn: The Delusions of Global Capitalism (2009), Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals (Granta, 2002 and 2003), Al Qaeda and What It Means To Be Modern (2003 i 2007), Black Mass: Apocalyptic Religion and the Death of Utopia (2008), Gray’s Anatomy: Selected Writings (2009), The Silence of Animals: thoughts on progress and other modern myths (2013) i The Soul of the Marionette: a short inquiry into human freedom (2015). La seva obra ha estat àmpliament traduïda al castellà, i algun títol al català. Escriu regularment a The Guardian, The New Statesman, The New York Review of Books, Harper’s Magazine.
